Lloyd R. Crowell

DEERWOOD -- Lloyd Robert Crowell, age 96, of Deerwood, died on Sunday, June 20, 2004, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd. He was born on Dec. 19, 1907, in Dykeman Settlement, Minn., to John and Selma (Johnson) Crowell. He married Violet E. Simonson on July 19, 1937, in Duluth. He was a member of the Crosby-Ironton Presbyterian Church, Crosby, serving various positions with Session and as Deacon. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. He served in the Battle of the Bulge, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was an avid golfer at Cuyuna Country Club, receiving a certificate from Golf Digest for scoring his age when he was 79 years old. He was a former mayor of Deerwood and a member of the Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post No. 557 of Deerwood and the 7th Armored division.

He is survived by his wife, Vi; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lucile and Merle Daugherty of Vinton, Iowa, Dorothy Wolleat of Minneapolis, Joan and David Turner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, Myrtle Davis of Brainerd and Gertrude Dunn of Lexington, Ky.; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Howard and Arthur Crowell, and a sister, Fern Davis.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Crosby-Ironton Presbyterian Church in Crosby with the Rev. Robert Munneke officiating. Burial will be at the Deerwood Scandia Cemetery in Deerwood. Friends may call on Friday one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
