I read with great interest your article of above subject in your editorial section of May 24.
I would like to add a "punch line" that would remind everyone what can be accomplished when operating as a cooperative. The success of the REA can be contributed largely to the fact that it is a cooperative, where the people own and operate it on a non-profit basis.
My point in bringing this matter to our readers' attention is that much could be gained in promoting the Garrison, Kathio, West Mille Lacs Lake sewage system to also operate as a cooperative rather than the proposed corporation. Many arguments and misunderstandings of a racial note, could be eliminated by everyone having a cooperative interest in the proposed system. The Native American Band already belongs to the Mille Lacs Electric Cooperative, so I'm sure they understand how well a cooperative operates.
To the editor regarding poor, maligned Planned Parenthood:
A reader protested that Planned Parenthood is not a rich organization. According to their 1997-1998 Annual Report, their total annual income was $554 million.
The reader also asserted that abortion is only a small part of what PPM does. The Planned Parenthood Federation is the largest provider of abortion in the world. In the U.S. alone, they perform over half of the million and a half abortions occurring annually.
For abortion "services" and other "services" provided to their clientele free of charge, we the taxpayers are charged at both the state and federal levels.
Consider this: In St. Paul, if you call PPM for an abortion and do not have money to pay, their counselors will assist you to apply for medical assistance. A pregnant woman can make over $30,420 and be eligible for medical assistance in Minnesota. In addition, a pregnant woman is considered a family of TWO when figuring income guidelines. Abortion providers give these women instructions to state on the application that they are pregnant, but to withhold the information that they are planning to "terminate the pregnancy."
Thus PPM aids women in Minnesota raid the coffers of this state in order to destroy their unborn children. Some of these women who decide to have their abortions may be reimbursed by the state because the coverage can be retroactive for three months prior to the application date.
So to those who minimize Planned Parenthood's role in the abortion industry, I have this to say:
Hey! The Nazis did a lot of good for Germany! For the first time in many years, Germany under Hitler was unified! He reduced inflation and improved the economy and thus the well-being of the German people!
So what if he operated a few little gas chambers on the side?

The letter about the Catholic Church's position on birth control and infallibility, does not reflect the true nature of the Church or its teachings.
The world view of the Church is of a huge corporation with three levels of authority, pope, bishops, priests and its members.
All including the leaders believe Christ is Head of the Church in all matters of faith and morals and is protected from error by the Holy Spirit. Catholics are persons of faith believing the Church is authored by Christ to teach truth.
Truth can be evolutionary such as our appreciation of the solar system. Human perception sees the sun rising in the east, but scientific observations reveal it is the earth which revolves around the sun. The unenlightened might have difficulty with this truth.
The Church does not have the fullness of truth about the human body, but it has no trouble with the truth that artificial birth control undermines marital fidelity, the dignity of womanhood and leads to inhumane levels of selfishness, promiscuity and venereal diseases.
The Human Life document enhances human dignity, ennobles the personhood of man and woman, protects family life and invites all to spiritualize their lives. The Church is ordained to lead people to faith, virtue, fidelity, chastity and holiness.
Jesus was a revolutionary put to death for what He said. Never once did He defend His doctrinal and moral revolution with social arguments. Invoking His divine authority He spoke thus: "I say to you."
There is cultural confusion about moral values, but the Church speaks with absolute authority and assurance. Ironically the spiritual gift of infallibility denied to the Church is often assumed by those who do not understand infallibility to be God's gift to the Church.
