Ever wonder who decided what "standard units" of measurements should be? It's widely believed that a foot is so called because it was the length of King John's foot; an inch the distance between knuckles on King Edgar's index finger; a yard the distance between King Henry's nose and outstretched thumb.
If you are out shopping and require measurements but don't have a ruler with you, just take out a quarter. It's exactly one inch across. Or a dollar bill, which is six inches -- making two bucks a foot.
