PILLAGER Cass County Budget Committee members will review 2008 county departmental budget requests between Aug. 6 and Aug. 28. The county board will set a preliminary 2008 levy at the Sept. 4 board meeting.
The budget committee will continue evaluating the 2008 budget, making final recommendations to the board Nov. 20. The auditor-treasurer will mail notices of proposed 2008 property taxes to taxpayers between Nov. 12 and 23.
The Truth in Taxation public hearing on the 2008 budget will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 6. The location likely will be at the courthouse in Walker. The board will set the final 2008 levy at the Dec. 18 regular meeting. That amount can be lower, but may not be higher than the preliminary levy set in September.
Tuesday, the board selected Hildi Inc. to determine the county's long-term financial liability for employee post-retirement benefits. Hildi will charge $100 to $250 per hour to do the study and has experience conducting similar evaluations for several Minnesota counties, cities and school districts.
The survey is preliminary to a future requirement that all counties eventually will have to fully fund post-retirement benefits.
The board referred a request from Cass County Soil and Water Conservation District for $6,750 to the 2008 budget committee for consideration in next year's funding allocations.
Administrator Robert Yochum reported that SWCD and the University of Minnesota Extension Service will consider ways to jointly provide education and support services for private land forestry management and for agricultural forage management.
