Mayor Bob Olson went 7-for-9 Monday night with mayoral appointments, but he failed to get either of his picks approved to the Public Utilities Commission. Former fire chief Ray Shortridge failed on a 4-3 vote, and fluoride foe Irene Johnson didn't get a motion.

An easing of the gasoline shortage - slight and spotty - was evident in Brainerd this morning as the National Guard began riding shotgun on delivery trucks. The governor called out the Guard and asked the State Patrol to protect shipments.

The newly remodeled, rebuilt and reopened North Central Speedway swings into its second week of operation Saturday night. Appearing with new cars will be Jim Sweet and Tom Feierabend, both of Brainerd, former champions at the old speedway.

Bud Ackley won the men's championship flight of the Brainerd Golf Club's first short stop tournament of the year. On the ladies side, Enid Fitzsimons won the championship flight and Lou Bang the First flight.

W. R. Hiller, manager of the local theater has brought back plans for a new, modern facility to be built on the site of the Park Theatre. It will be equipped to handle the rapidly advancing progress in sound.
100 years ago (1909)
The southside team, which has re-christened itself the Cubs, beat Alderman Cardle's All Stars in a closely contested baseball game, winning by 7 to 6. The latter team expects to meet the Brewsters again soon and when they do the fur will fly.
