Penny Long, registered nurse, nurse manager at the Brainerd Community Based Outpatient Clinic was recently honored as the outstanding RN in a non-traditional nursing role.
Long also won the VA Midwest Health Care Network award for a RN in a non-traditional nursing role.
The St. Cloud VA Medical Center recognized outstanding employees at its Annual Employee Appreciation Week/Nurses Week Ceremony on May 14. It was a surprise award for Long who thought she was going to attend a meeting in St. Cloud.
"I am very honored to have received these awards," Long said. "I work with an exceptional team at the Brainerd outpatient clinic and enjoy providing services to our veterans. They truly deserve the outstanding care we provide." As clinic coordinator, Long is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Brainerd outpatient clinic.
Long joined the VA in 2007. Previously, she was director of nursing at Riverwood HealthCare Center in Aitkin. She worked in triage and patient care in the emergency department at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd and as a clinical nursing instructor with the University of South Dakota long distance associate degree nursing program.
Long's clinical experience includes, surgical, emergency care, labor/deliver/nursery, oncology, occupational/employee health, coronary care/intensive care, recovery room, newborn/pediatrics, respiratory therapy and cardiac rehab.
She has certifications in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, neonatal advanced life support, advanced cardiac life support, public health nursing, trauma nurse core course, emergency pediatric nursing.
She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing through the College of St. Scholastica in 2002, an associate's degree through Central Lakes College in 2002, has gained a certificate in Management in Patient Care Administration from the University of Minnesota and is working on completing here masters degree.
