Joseph Paul Straka, age 91, resident of Brainerd, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at St. Cloud Veterans Home. He was born on June 12, 1917, in Brainerd to Frank and Mary Straka.
Joe was a disabled American veteran of World War II. He spent one year in Australia and four years in New Guinea. He was an active member of the American Legion and VFW. He was an avid sports enthusiast and active in many early Brainerd teams, including the Brainerd Braves Baseball of the Central League, Brainerd Red Devils Hockey Team. Joe participated in many sports championships and set many records. He was a member of St. Francis Church and Immaculate Heart Church of Crosslake.
He is survived by his sons, John and David (Pam); brothers, Fritz (Vi), Walter (Cleta), James (Betty); sister, Helen; and grandchildren, Jonathan and Jocelyn Straka; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy of 57 years; his parents; brother, Father Bill Straka of the Crosier Order; sister, Marge; half brother, Carl; and half sisters, Mary and Francis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 23, 2008, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd with military honors provided by Brainerd American Legion Color Guard Post No. 255. Burial will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Camp Ripley. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd and also will be held the hour prior to services at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. Cloud Veterans Extended Care Facility Building 49, second floor.
