MANKATO - The Mankato Moondogs scored all 12 of its run in the first five innings as they throttled the Brainerd Blue Thunder 12-3 Tuesday in Northwoods League play.
Brainerd (6-13 overall) had no answer for Moondogs (8-11) leftfielder Mike Melillo, who went 3-for-4 and drove in six runs. Melillo singled in the third to bring in two runs and had a three-run home run in the fifth inning.
In the seventh Erik Komatsu opened with a walk and advanced to second on an Xavier Scruggs single. Komatsu later scored Brainerd's first run of the game on a David Wilson groundout.
Brainerd tacked on another run in the eighth and one in the ninth. In the eighth as Jared McDonald singled with one out and advanced to second on an Andy Dirks base hit. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball and Ryan Royster drove in McDonald with a single.
In the ninth Scruggs walked and moved to second on a groundout. Wilson then singled up the middle to plate Scruggs and drive in his second run of the game.
Both teams will play again at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday before the Blue Thunder return to Mills Field for a two-game stint with Rochester and one game with Alexandria.
