Doris Steen

Doris Steen, age 96, passed away on Friday, June 11, 2004, at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, Minn.

She was born on Oct. 16, 1907, in Roseville Township, Grant County, Minnesota, to Fred and Grace (Brennin) Luckman. Doris graduated from the Minnesota School for the Deaf in May 1928. She was married to Alf Steen on May 28, 1930. Doris and Alf farmed near Barrett until his death in August 1959. In 1962, Doris moved to Barrett and was employed by the Barrett Care Center until her retirement in 1982. The American Nursing Home Association named her the 1967 Housekeeper of the Year.

In 1990, Doris moved to the North Star Apartments in Brainerd where she enjoyed being a member of the North Star Quilters.

Doris loved watching sports, following politics, quilting, fancy work, gardening and baking.

She is survived by two daughters, Claire (Greg Marolt) Steen of Brainerd and Adella (Ray) Blakesley Kaczmarek of White Bear Lake; six grandchildren, Barry Marolt of Des Moines, Iowa, Stephanie Marolt of Minneapolis, Jeff Blakesley of Maplewood, Jerry Blakesley of St. Paul, Jennifer Lohr of Mahtomedi, and Julia (Alan) Ebbert of White Bear Lake; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alf, five sisters and two brothers, granddaughter-in-law Kandy Cebelak Blakesley and great-grandsons Brook and Tanner Blakesley.

Friends are invited to call at the Steen-Marolt residence from 1-5 p.m. on June 25, 2004, at 29 Kingwood, Brainerd, Minn. Arrangements are with Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd.
