STAPLES - Rodney Smith, age 73, died late Tuesday evening, June 12, 2007, at St. Cloud Hospital.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at 1 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Staples, with Rev. Chris Culuris officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at noon at the funeral home. Interment will be at Scandia Valley Cemetery at Cushing.
Rodney Albert Smith was born Aug. 10, 1933, to Albert and Jenne (Fougner) Smith. He graduated from Staples High School in 1951. He served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. He was united in marriage to Carole Hutchinson on June 30, 1962. He worked road construction from 1959-1966, then in Little Falls building snowplows from 1969-1993. After he retired he worked at Countryside Restaurant when it opened in November of 1996 until February 2007. He loved the outdoors and feeding all his "critters"! His favorite pastime was his woodworking and making things for everyone.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carole; one son, Bryan and Tina; one daughter, Apryl and husband Rick; six grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Kaitlyn and Megan Smith, Brandi and Mercedes Deering; brothers and sisters Rollie (Sharon), Allen (Carol) Smith, Amy (Art) Poll, Onie Ziehl and Diane Smith and also his "family" from the restaurant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Jenne Smith; and brother Keith; one sister-in-law; one brother-in-law; and one nephew; his faithful friend, Sugar; and Fred, the Dumpster cat.
Services are entrusted to Brenny Funeral Home, Staples.
