Kudos to the Dispatch for the Cal Thomas column on June 13. Brainerd's "Reading Recovery" program for the lowest 20 percent first-grade children not only is costly at $8,000 extra for each child but has children memorizing words by their shape and guess at them by what makes sense. Shame on Brainerd schools for adopting an approach for beginning readers that does not stress phonics. Where are the children who have had Reading Recovery now? Still at the bottom of their class, guessing at words. For more information, see EductionNews.org and search for "Reading Recovery." Parents, guard your children from this program.

Brainerd native Mike Weinkauf, president at Babe Winkelman Productions, doesn't mind being a bass angler in a walleye angler's world. Kleman: Don't be too proud to use bobber
"When bass are shallow but finicky try drop-shot rigging. Most people use this method only when fishing deep, but it works great for sight fishing in the shallows. Use light line, 6- to 10-pound test, and place the weight about a foot below the worm. When you bounce the rig up and down the worm stays in position instead of coming back to you. Bass that are cruising in the shallows but not in the chase mode can be tempted to strike.
