OWATONNA (AP) -- The man charged with shooting and wounding a police officer at an Owatonna drug store has been sent to the state security hospital in St. Peter for a mental health evaluation.
David Coughlin, 38, Hollandale, is charged in Steele County with attempted murder and assault.
Police said they were called to the drug store June 8 when Coughlin became agitated after he demanded and was refused antibiotics. Officer Joel Welinksi was hit in the arm and leg in a shootout with Coughlin, who was wounded in the arm and leg.
