Bernie Penner, county executive director for Crow Wing-Cass County Farm Service Agency, reminded livestock owners the deadline for applying for benefits under LCP-II is July 3.
Eligible livestock are dairy, beef, buffalo, sheep and goats. Livestock must have been owned for 90 days and June 1, 2002, must fall within that 90-day period. Animals that were sold or have died since June 1, 2002, must be documented on sales or rendering receipts at the time of sign-up. The livestock operation must be headquartered in an eligible county.
The payment rates are: $31.50 per head for adult cows and bulls, $18 per head for adult beef, buffalo and beefalo, $13.50 per head for non-breeding beef, dairy, buffalo and beefalo heifers and bulls over 500 pounds, and $4.50 per head for all sheep and goats. Payment rates are based in the size and age of the animal on June 1, 2002.
Sign-up has been going on since April 1. Penner said about 197 livestock owners have applied and received more than $300,000. The average payment is about $1,500 per owner.
Producers should have their animal numbers by category, and should have a record of inventory as of June 1, 2002, as well as receipts for those animals no longer on the farm. It is important to call ahead for an appointment. The contact information for the Crow Wing and Cass County FSA is:
