A Silver Tsunami will soon hit Brainerd.
Are we prepared? By 2020 it is expected that we will have more persons over 65 years of age than school-age children. To position Brainerd for the coming age wave, we have been participating in an initiative called Brainerd for a Lifetime.
On Jan. 24, Brainerd for a Lifetime had a community kickoff meeting and the initiative was introduced to the community. On April 15, the second Brainerd for a Lifetime meeting was held. Community-wide assessments were made in the areas of access to health care opportunities/care giving, safety and security, housing and transportation/walkability. Committee members were selected and the research began.
The goal of Brainerd for a Lifetime is to evaluate each area and identify where our community is falling short in providing services in that area. Each committee will make recommendations for specific actions to affect the changes that need to be made. Assessments from each of the committees have required research, contacts with key businesses or organizations and additional team meetings to develop these recommendations. Each committee will need to complete its assessment process by June 24, the next scheduled meeting for all committees. The meeting will be held at First Lutheran Church, 424 S. 8th St., Brainerd, beginning at noon. Findings of each assessment committee will be made to the full group and the next steps in the process discussed.
Initially one might not think about the importance of our community's readiness. Some may think it is not necessary to plan. However, it cannot be stressed enough that the coming changes will affect everyone. If you have not attended a prior meeting, please attend this one. Everyone's input is wanted and needed. This is a community call to action and we should not let this opportunity to plan for the coming Silver Tsunami pass by. We look forward to seeing you on June 24!
