IRONTON -- Virgil Clifford Lay, 72, Ironton, died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
He was born June 20, 1929, in Clara City to Ben and Marie (Gerdes) Lay. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Myrin James American Legion Post No. 443 of Ironton and the Minnesota Chapter No. 22 of the DAV.
Survivors include his wife, Kathaleen; two stepsons, Gerald Helget, Bakersfield, Calif., and Michael Helget, Aiken, S.C.; six daughters, Carole Hergers, St. Martin, Jacqueline Matthes, Las Vegas, Patricia Ayers, Browerville, Juanita Lay, Canby, Valerie Williams, Denver, and Nancy Lay, Canby; a stepdaughter, Barbara Helget, Sauk Rapids; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five sisters, Myrtle Rohrer, Crookston, Janet Holtkamp, New London, Cassie Maahs, Pennock, Betty Holm, Stillwater, and Glenda Rutz, Cologne; and his former wife, Janet Lay, Canby.
His parents, a brother, John Lay, two sisters, Arlene McKenzie and Bernice Soper, a stepson, Robert Helget, and two infant sons, Victor and James, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Koop Funeral Home in Crosby with Greg Meyer officiating.
Friends may call an hour before services Tuesday at the funeral home.
