Minnesota Fishing Report
By Outdoor News
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
Walleyes and northern pike continue to hit redtails, shiners, and leeches in 12 to 27 feet on Gull Lake, North Long Lake, and Pelican Lake. Sunfish are being found on the shallow sand and reeds, while most bigger pods of crappies are now weedline related. Bass are hitting spinnerbaits and plastics on the weedlines of most lakes.
LAKE MILLE LACS
EAST - The night slip bobber and leech bite is consistent in six to 10 feet. Most rock points and shallow reefs are holding fish. During the day, work the gravel in 22 to 25 feet with Lindy Rigs and leeches. Smallmouths are hitting large, plastic tubes and crankbaits on the rocks. Muskie action is limited.
WEST - Midday and lowlight periods are best spent on mud flats in 24 to 32 feet. Spinners or live-bait rigs tipped with minnows, crawlers, and leeches have worked best during the day, while slip bobbers and leeches are the way to go from sunset and beyond. Seguchies Flat, Seven Mile, Eight Mile, Shermans Flat, and Curleys Flat are worth checking for walleyes.
LAKE OF THE WOODS
Limits of walleyes and sauger are coming from the south shore in 10 to 17 feet. Work Twin Rock to Twin Island up to Zipple Bay and out to the Gap near Pine Island with spinners, jigs, or crankbaits. Smallies and pike can be had on the weedlines throughout the Rainy River. Walleyes are hitting bottom bouncers and crawlers along Northwest Angle shorelines. A few muskies have been hooked near the islands in the area.
LEECH LAKE AREA
A jig and minnow is producing walleyes in eight to 14 feet off Pine Point and the Hardwoods. Near Pelican Island and Huttels Reef, leeches and minnows are working in 14 to 17 feet. Good-sized perch are mixed with the walleyes. Panfish and muskie reports have been limited, but bass action is improving in the rice beds near Minnesota Island.
RAINY LAKE
Walleyes are coming from the Seine River area and Willow Bay in less than 12 feet. There deep bite is consistent in 30 feet in Sand Bay. Jigs and minnows or a leech and live-bait rig are working best. In Black Bay, Rapalas are producing walleyes during the evening and the shallow-water crappie bite continues to improve. Smallmouth bass have become very active on the shallow sand and rock.
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH
If its windy, the shallow-water walleye bite is productive at Little Stoney Point, south end of Highbanks, Ravens Point, and the river mouth. Fish the wind-driven shoreline in six to 10 feet. Main-lake bars are providing consistent action in 18 to 22 feet. Lindy Rigs and leeches are working best on Big Muskie Bar, Bena Bar, and the Snaghole. Perch are scattered with the biggest concentration of good-sized fish coming from less than 10 feet.
BEMIDJI AREA
The nine- to 14-foot flats of Lake Bemidji and Lake Plantagenet continue to produce walleyes. Leeches and crawlers now are working better than minnows. Trolling with Jakes on Little Wolf Lake, Bemidji, and Plantagenet is triggering muskies. Look for good-sized crappies and sunfish in the reeds and lily pads of Pimushe Lake, Big Lake, and Lower Sucker Lake.
BLACKDUCK AREA
During the day, a jig and minnow is producing walleyes on Blackduck Lake in 10 to 20 feet. Crankbaits are working best during the evening hours in slightly shallower water. Work the emerging weedlines of Gilstead Lake and Rabideau Lake in eight to 10 feet for crappies and sunfish. The areas best bass reports are coming off Gilstead and Twin Lake in shallow water.
CASS LAKE AREA
Walleyes can be had on Cass Lake with minnows in 25 to 45 feet during the day or with crankbaits in eight to 10 feet during the evening hours. Perch are scattered in the bulrushes of Cass and Pike Bay Lake, while Rapalas continue to trigger numbers of pike on Lake Andrusia. Look for crappies in the shallows of Buck Lake and Kitchi Lake. Midge Lake and Grace Lake remain the best options for bluegills in less than eight feet.
CROSBY AREA
Walleye action remains consistent with Lindy Rigs and crawlers or redtails on Rabbit Lake and Serpent Lake. Crankbaits are producing pike on most lakes along the established weedlines. Look for panfish in four to 12 feet on lakes such as Mahnomen, Roosevelt, Black Hoof, Black, and Serpent. For largemouth bass, pitch a plastic worm in the weeds of Horseshoe Lake, Rabbit, and Lake Edward. The Portsmouth Pit is providing the best trout action.
HACKENSACK AREA
Walleyes are hitting spinner rigs tipped with crawlers or leeches in 24 to 28 feet on Ten Mile Lake. Retrieve a small spinnerbait over three- to 14-foot weed tops of Webb Lake and Birch Lake for crappies. Sunfish and bass are active in the shallows of most lakes and muskie action remains limited.
McGREGOR AREA
Crawlers and leeches now are producing most of the walleyes on Big Sandy Lake in 14 to 17 feet. Big Sandy is also worth noting for sunfish, as are the shallows of Lake Minnewawa. Pike and bass are an easy catch along the weedlines of most lakes, while Minnewawa continues to kick out good-sized crappies in less than 10 feet of water.
RED LAKE
Jigs and minnows, crankbaits, or spinners and leeches are producing walleyes. East shore and south shore rocks and humps are best in eight to 12 feet. Crappie limits have come from rock piles and two- to four-foot shoreline areas. Pike are active, hitting spoons and crankbaits throughout the lake.
