Crow Wing County is considering how it can improve operation of the planning and zoning department.
Crow Wing County Zoning Technician Chuck Kauppi is serving as interim planning and zoning administrator. Former administrator Dean Williams resigned in May.
County Administrator Peter Herlofsky Jr. asked the county planning commission Thursday for suggestions on how to improve the planning and zoning administrator position. Herlofsky also is asking board of adjustment members for suggestions. He said he would like to present the feedback he receives to the Crow Wing County Board in July.
Roger Landers, chair of the planning commission, suggested that two people should head this department. He said one could specifically deal with land issues and the other could be the administrator.
"I can't see how an administrator can do both," he said.
Commission member Ray Griffin said the office needs someone who is good at facilitating a meeting, keeping members on track and making sure procedures are done properly.
"We are just volunteers," he said.
Ed Larsen, county commissioner and member of the planning commission, said the county needs to look at the things that need to be done in the planning and zoning department.
"We need a procedure," he said.
Larsen said the commission should be able to eliminate half of the applications that come through the office if the zoning map and land use plan were updated.
Carol Cloud, member of the planning commission and the board of adjustment, would like to see more checklists to give to customers to simplify the process.
Herlofsky said a checklist also would be helpful and keep a consistent approach at the counter to enhance customer service.
Herlofsky has no date in mind for when the position will be filled. He said he first wants to gather information.
