Aitkin's Herron, Pillager's Davison secure sevenths; Brainerd's Dean finishes in 14th

Brainerd's Jimmy Dean placed 14th in the 3200-meter run finals in Friday's Class 2A state track and field meet at Hamline University in St. Paul.

In the Class 1A meet, Aitkin's Carissa Herron scored a seventh-place finish in the high jump and Pillager's Tony Davison vaulted to seventh place in the pole vault.

Madison Smith ran a 15.26 time, good for fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles prelims in the Class 2A state track and field meet Friday at Hamline University. Smith advanced to Saturday's finals.

During Friday's Class 2A preliminaries, Brainerd's 4x200 relay of Jacob Goodew, Joe Nelson, Jordan Hayes and Dan Lauer clocked a 1:30.20 to finish seventh and advance to Saturday's finals. White Bear Lake ran a 1:27.63 to earn the top seed.

The Warriors 4x100 relay just missed the finals as it placed 10th with a 43.39. Forest Lake finished ninth with a 43.38 as the final team to make the cut. Edina ran a 42.44 for the top seed in that event.

No area girls competed in Class 2A finals Friday, but Brainerd's Kelsi Ring posted a 15.12 for third in the 100 hurdles and Madison Smith was fifth in 15.26. Both girls will attempt to run down Richfield's Jessica January, who posted a top time of 14.66, in Saturday's final.

Smith will also try and run down January in the 300 hurdles. Smith posted a second-place 44.70, while January ran a first-place 44.64.

The Flyers' Emily VanHeel just missed the 400 dash finals with a 10th-place 58.24. The ninth and final qualifier ran a 57.78. The top time was 55.42 by Lindsy Mattson of Grand Rapids.

VanHeel finished 14th in the 200 dash with a 26.01. The top time was 24.44.

In the Class 1A meet, Herron jumped 5-foot-3 to improve on her section leap of 5-foot. Waseca's Katie Guse won the event with a 5-8. The next three girls cleared 5-4.

Staples-Motley's Caitlin Peterson finished 12th in the discus with a toss of 102-5. Perham's Elisa Moenkedick won the event with a 140-6.

Davison went 13-6 to better his section vault of 13-0. Anthony Puckett of Mayer Lutheran went 14-0 as did runner up Riley Sikkink of Milaca.

S-M's Brandon Larson leaped 40-4 to finish 13th in the triple jump. Tim Halvorson of Concordia Academy won with a 45-3.

In Friday's Class 1A preliminaries, S-M's Jaelin Beachy reached the finals of the 100 hurdles with a seventh-place 15.67. That bettered the eighth graders' seed time of 16.59. The top time was 15.12.

Beachy's senior teammate Ashley Lisson will also run in Saturday's finals as she placed seventh in the 100 dash with a 12.50. The top time was 12.26.

Pillager's Shane White placed sixth in the 110 hurdles to advance. He ran a 15.45. The top time was 14.92.

Pierz's Jake Nelson will run twice Saturday. He advanced in the 100 dash with an 11.27. and the 200 dash with a 22.90.

While Jack Parker didn't advance in the 100 dash, he did help the Pequot Lakes 4x100 relay to a sixth-place time of 44.80. The top time was posted by DeLaSalle with a 43.12.

Pillager's Wesley DeLong and Crosby-Ironton's Mark Hoge will both run in the 400 dash finals. DeLong finished seventh with a 40.70 and Hoge was ninth in 50.98. The top time was 48.92.

DeLong will have double duty as he also advanced in the 800 with a fourth best 2:02.50.
