Nominations sought

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Brainerd Lakes Affiliate is now accepting nominations for the third annual Ginger Brauer Breast Cancer Support award.

This award was established in 2001 to honor Ginger Brauer who exemplified the selfless giving of time and energy in support of area breast cancer programs and activities in the Cass and Crow Wing County service area. A founding member of the Komen Brainerd Lakes Affiliate, Brauer lost her battle with breast cancer in May 2001.

Each year the Komen Brainerd Lakes Affiliate will accept nominations from the general public from Cass and Crow Wing counties for this award. All nominations must be received by June 18. The winner of the award will be announced at the Komen Brainerd Lakes Race for the Cure fund-raising event on June 28 at the Brainerd High School athletic field.

All nominees must live in Crow Wing or Cass counties. They must have given of their time and energy to help support local breast cancer programs or have made a significant influence in the community in dealing with breast cancer education, treatment and/or support programs.

All nominations must include: Your name, address, e-mail address, if available, and phone number; the nominee's name, address and phone number; and a detailed description of how your nominee has supported area breast cancer education, screening and/or treatment programs in Cass or Crow Wing counties.

Komen Brainerd Lakes Race for the Cure entry forms can be found on the Web site, www.brainerdlakesrace.org, or by stopping in at any area chamber of commerce, Mills Fleet Farm and many other area businesses in Crow Wing and Cass counties.

Mississippi Headwaters Board to meet

The Mississippi Headwaters Board will meet 9 a.m. June 20 at the Cass County Courthouse in Walker.

In general, office hours for the Mississippi Headwaters Board will be 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.

Initiative Foundation awards grants

The Initiative Foundation announced it awarded four community grants totaling $33,000 in May.

Area recipients include:

* Cass County/Wabedo, Little Boy, Inguadona, Cooper Rice Lakes, Walker; septic inspections, $5,000, to discount septic inspections and provide low-interest to help update problem systems. Contact: Robert Yochum.

* Cass County Economic Development Corp., Lake Shore, The Success Connection on Main Street, Technology Workshop, $2,000, to support a workshop focusing on the effective use of technology by small businesses and communities. Contact: Dave Johnson.

* Mid-State Education District, Little Falls, 2004 Worker Disabilities Awareness Calendar, $1,000, to support the creation, printing and distribution of a 2004 calendar celebrating the participation of disabled young adults focusing on the goal of independent living. Contact: Lois Anderson.

The foundation seeks projects that strengthen central Minnesota communities and address barriers to economic development. Grants are available for short-term planning efforts, up to $5,000, and program implementation for single community projects, up to $10,000. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and are generally reviewed within 90 days of receipt.

Summer fly-in at Brainerd airport

Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport will host the second annual summer fly-in from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Area residents are invited to stop out and view Brainerd area aircraft and surprise visitors. Enter to win a ride in a North Memorial Air Ambulance, go on discount air rides and more.

Red Cross training offered

The Northern Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering the following classes in July: workplace training, adult CPR, infant/child CPR, community first aid and safety, basic first aid and baby-sitting training.

Transportation panel meets Tuesday

The Crow Wing County Transportation Committee will meet 3 p.m. Tuesday in the county board room within the Crow Wing County Courthouse.

Pequot Lakes School Board to meet

The Pequot Lakes School Board will meet 8 a.m. June 26 in the school gathering room.

The agenda includes approval of the preliminary 2003-2004 budget.

Airport commission to meet Tuesday

A special meeting of the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport Commission will be 8:30 a.m. Monday in the airport conference room to discuss proposed staff changes.
