Dear Heloise: Hint 1: To make it easier to find the deductible checks I've written throughout the year at tax time, I use red and blue pencils and place a red dot in the code column of my checkbook for medical expenses and a blue dot for charitable expenses.
Hint 2: To remember whether or not I have taken a daily dose of a medication, I place the bottle upright on the table or counter at the beginning of the day. When I have taken the medication, I turn the bottle upside down until the end of the day. -- Joan Oday, Gaithersburg, Md.
Your medication hint is one way to remember if you have taken your daily meds; however, please be sure there is no chance that small ones could get into the medication. -- Heloise
Stuck with an odd pierced earring or tie tack? Don't fret -- here are a few ideas:
Use them as attractive scarf pins.
Use on package decorations.
Break off the back and put one in the middle of a ribbon or bow.
Hot-glue one to a hair ornament.
If you have several, make them into a one-of-a-kind pin collage.
Dear Heloise: After washing out the cat-litter pan, I put a layer of baking soda in first and then use the economy commercial cat litter. It diminishes the odor and saves money on expensive cat litter. -- F.S., Mount Pearl, Newfoundland, Canada
Isn't baking soda wonderful! It is one of the best inexpensive cleaners around and can be used all over the house. Keep an eye on your kitty because some might not like baking soda. Don't use the scented carpet deodorizers in a litter b ox for the same reason. -- Heloise
Dear Heloise: I'd like to sound off about drivers who speed through parking lots when the weather is bad and they are in their comfortable cars. Where has courtesy gone? -- Saundra King Byers, Nevada, Mo.
