ST. PAUL (AP) -- A 15-year-old boy, whose family came to the United States just two months ago from Somalia, drowned here in the swimming pool of his apartment building.
Mohamed Awale, a rising sophomore at Como Park High School, was found about 10 p.m. Saturday at the bottom of the pool. The boy was taken to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 10:30 p.m.
Neighbor Dave Anderson said he looked out a window and saw something in the deep end of the pool.
''We ran down there right away to check and see what it was,'' he said. He called 911 immediately, and a friend pulled Awale from the water and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Emergency crews also tried to revive the boy on the pool deck.
An autopsy was planned by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's office.
