Raiders come back to win national title

Frentzos' third-place 71 helps CLC make up four-stroke deficit in New York

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. -- Trailing by four strokes entering the final day, the Central Lakes College Raiders men's golf team rallied to capture the NJCAA Division III national championship by one shot Friday at Chautauqua Golf Club.

Monroe Community College had 903 strokes to CLC's 907 entering Friday's last day. The Raiders shot 303 Friday while Monroe carded a 308. That enabled CLC to finish with a 72-hole total of 1210 to Monroe's 1211.

CLC's Theo Frentzos shot 71 Friday and finished third individually with a 291 total. Brock Gasow finished 22nd, Kyle Peterson 31st, Travis Wilson 50th and Jeff Grote 84th for the Raiders, who are coached by Jim Russell.

Final team scores -- 1-Central Lakes 303 Friday (1210 four-round total), 2-Monroe Community College 308 (1211), 3-Georgia Military College 301 (1221), 4-College of DuPage 302 (1226), 5-Columbus State 309 (1226)

6-Eastfield College 311 (1234), 7-Tomkins Courtland 310 (1250), 8-Louisburg 311 (1261), 9-Dean College 318 (1266), 10-Jamestown CC 308 (1266)

11-Westmoreland CC 317 (1280), 12-Bergen CC 309 (1287), 13-Burlington County 341 (1382), 14-Nassau CC DQ (960)
