WALKER -- A second Cass Lake man was charged in connection with the Jan. 23 robbery at Big Winnie Bar in Bena.
David Joseph Staples, 26, faces one count of felony second-degree aggravated robbery. He appeared Monday in Cass County District Court before Judge John P. Smith. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 20.
Leslie Charles Headbird, 36, Cass Lake, entered the bar first and prevented customers from leaving the bar. A second man wearing a white rag over his face then entered the bar and demanded cash from the bartender, who reportedly turned over $293 from the cash register.
The man wearing the white rag then left. Customers in the bar detained Headbird and held him for authorities.
Officers stopped a blue van a short distance from the scene. Staples was one of three men in that van. They were held for a short time, then released.
According to the complaint filed against Staples, when Headbird pleaded guilty March 22 to felony aiding and abetting theft from a person, he said Staples had been traveling with him in the van to the bar and that Staples was the person wearing a white rag over his face.
Headbird is scheduled for sentencing June 20.
