Garrett Warren and Cliff Edberg baffled the Mariners to lead the Yankees to an 8-1 Pony League baseball victory Monday in the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department's Game of the Week.
Warren pitched the first four innings for the Yankees and fanned nine of the 12 batters he faced. Only the Mariners' Adain Kummet, who had a two-out single in the fourth inning, reached base against Warren.
Edberg pitched the last two innings and struck out four batters. Brandon Oppelt walked to open the fifth inning, stole second and third, and scored on a base hit by Darren Lutgens. Cody Flanagan had a base hit for the Mariners in the sixth.
The Yankees scored in bunches. Nate Weber's double drove in two runs in the first inning. In the third frame, Mike O'Day and Edberg singled before Warren drilled a two-run double. Weber followed with an RBI single to give the Yankees a 6-0 cushion. The Yankees added two runs in the fifth inning.
Oppelt started for the Mariners and struck out the side in the second inning. Kummet relieved Oppelt and struck out the last four batters he faced.
The victory lifted the Yankees to 4-2 and the Mariners dropped to 3-3.
