MANKATO -- The Brainerd Mighty Gulls collected just one hit in a 9-5 loss to the Mankato Mashers in Northwoods League baseball at Franklin Rogers Park Friday.
Brian Whinnery got the win, permitting the only Gulls hit, a 2-run homer in the second by Keith Laski. Whinnery walked five and struck out three.
Whinnery went 5 1/3 innings, followed by Nick Worm, Travis Riggins and Reed Pawlek.
Gene DeSalme was the starter and loser for the Gulls. He gave up five hits and six earned runs in 6 2/3 innings, walked six and struck out four. Al Bomer yielded four hits and two earned runs, walked two and struck out in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Nick Walsh, Jason Waugh, Ryan Edgington and Brett Wayne each had two hits for Mankato, which improved to 3-4.
The Mighty Gulls lost for the fifth time in seven games.
