ROCHESTER (AP) -- A 14-year-old Elgin boy who went swimming with a friend on a hot, muggy day drowned in Foster-Arend Pond, despite a search by an underwater rescue class that was practicing nearby.
Tyler Larson and two buddies rode their bikes to the pond Thursday. He and Travis Hinz stripped to their shorts and jumped in. But a few minutes later, Tyler disappeared about 25 feet from shore.
Mike Hines was also at the pond, watching his two friends from shore. He said Tyler yelled for help and then Travis yelled that Tyler had gone under. Mike screamed for help, then dove in.
''He started yelling for help, so I went out there and I couldn't get him,'' Mike said Thursday.
Divers from the class joined the frantic search in the muddy water. Tyler's body was found about a half-hour later by one of the divers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident happened about 12:45 p.m., away from the authorized swimming beach.
