Scarce energy resources and inflation will continue to drive energy costs upward throughout the 1980s. This was the conclusion reached at Madden's Resort by speakers of the United Power Association.

30 years ago (1970)

Gladys Hansen and Sylvia Dahl tied for first place honors in Wednesday's first Ladies Golf League Tournament at the Brainerd Golf Course. Arla Bollig was second, Mary Faust and Inez Smith tied for third and Dovey Pomerleau was fourth.

40 years ago (1960)

Brainerd ranks 18th among 31 middle-sized Minnesota cities of the ratio of per capita sales to income. The study using 1958 figures, credits Brainerd with per capita income of about $1,550 and per capita retail sales of about $1,750.

60 years ago (1940)

There's a reason for all this rain and I think the Ladies' Day at the Country Club is the cause of it. Have you noticed how it rains every time there's a golf luncheon? I think I'll take it up with the Social Committee -- Mesdames William Fitzsimnons, V.E. Quanstrom, Nesmith Nelson and Clinton Nelson.
