Roger Nutting, son of Marv Nutting of Brainerd, has been promoted from commander to captain in the U. S. Navy. Captain Nutting just returned from Pearl Harbor, where he was in charge of finance for the Western Fleet, and is now at the Pentagon.

(Photo) Dan Johnson, a 14-year-old from Excelsior, battled this 23-10 northern for half an hour (with help from a buddy) before landing it at Whitefish Lake. It measured 47 inches in length and 22 in girth.
60 years ago (1949)
Bullhead wrestling has now become the newest sport here. Just ask Duane Guin, a 16-year-old Brainerd boy who was seining minnows in a stream near Milaca. He spotted the fish, chased it downstream and tossed it on the bank. It weighed 12 pounds, 5 ounces.
80 years ago (1929)
More than 15 outboard motor boats will compete in the first races of the year at Lum Park on Rice Lake. The races will be in four divisions under auspices of the Brainerd Outboard Motor Association. Speeds up to 38 miles an hour will be attained.
100 years ago (1909)
Peter Larson and family of Deerwood, having sold his farm for a large sum, left today for a three month visit at their old home in Denmark. May they have a pleasant journey and safe return.
