CUYUNA -- Thomas Arnold O'Brien, 89, Cuyuna, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1912, in St. Cloud, to Thomas Edward and Mary Elizabeth (Overbeck) O'Brien. He attended Ironton School and graduated from the Crosby Ironton High School in 1930. He worked for Evergreen Mines in 1932, attended the University of Minnesota from 1934 to 1939, graduating from the school of journalism. He returned to work for Evergreen Mines and later Hanna Mining Co. He married Mabel Wright in 1940, in Cass Lake and returned to Crosby. They moved to Cuyuna in 1944. He retired from Hanna Mining in 1967. He began working at Crow Wing County Social Services, retiring again in 1975. He was a long-time member of the Cuyuna City Council and served as city clerk for a term. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Deerwood and was a Cuyuna Range Knights of Columbus charter member. He was a long-time member of the Cuyuna Fire Department.
Survivors include a son, William O'Brien, Deerwood; four daughters, Anne Mackey and Mary Middleton, both of Ashland, Wis., Patricia Schultz, Prior Lake, Barbara O'Brien, Bailey, Colo.; a brother, Jack O'Brien, San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Louise Krall, Crosby; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
His wife died in 1987 and three sisters, Mary Jane Aulie, Helen Knox and Rose Mertz also died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Deerwood with Father Howard Eisel officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby with a rosary at 7 p.m. and also one hour before the services Tuesday at the church.
