BIG LAKE (AP) -- A 17-year-old boy was in critical condition after shooting himself in the head during a six-hour standoff with law enforcement authorities, according to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Department.
The standoff began around 4 p.m. Thursday at a house north of Big Lake, which is 25 miles southeast of St. Cloud. Big Lake police had received a tip that a suspect in a recent armed robbery was in the house. The robbery happened Tuesday night at the Tom Thumb Food Market in Big Lake.
After the suspect retreated into the house and barricaded the door, authorities tried to persuade him to come out, said Sheriff Bruce Anderson. He said that while a special response team prepared to go into the house around 10 p.m., officers heard a gun shot.
The teen-ager was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he was listed in critical condition Friday morning.
