Gas leak causes post office evacuation
The Brainerd Fire Department responded at 6:20 a.m. Saturday to a gas leak at the Brainerd Post Office.
Three people were injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred Friday on U.S. 169 at Stevens Road in Mille Lacs County, according to the State Patrol.

Andrew just finished sixth grade and lives near Pine River. He's looking for an ordinary guy as his adult partner. Minnesota to honor Vietnam era veterans
An event to honor Vietnam era veterans is planned for June 13 at the Capitol grounds in St. Paul. There is a bus scheduled for those in the area who would like to attend the event. The bus will leave at 6 a.m. June 13 from the Brainerd High School parking lot (the upper lot near the library) and will return about 7 p.m. that night.

Basketball player upgraded to fair condition
Michael Ward, the 17-year-old Pequot Lakes High School student who went into cardiac arrest Tuesday night in the high school gym during basketball practice, was upgraded Friday to fair condition at St. Cloud Hospital.

At 3:35 p.m. Thursday, the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department received a report of a death that had occurred at a residence located at the 12,000 block of Young Lake Road in Merrifield.

Max Norman Reeve
Max Norman Reeve, age 89, formerly of Backus, passed away April 4, 2009, at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center, Pine River. The oldest of nine children, he was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Lenox, Iowa, to Cleo and Myrtle Reeve. Max moved to Minnesota with his parents in 1934. He served in the Navy during World War II. Max married Helen Barchus on Aug. 24, 1946. He was a member of the Maxson Van Eps American Legion in Backus.

Open Forum: Obama should have echoed Reagan
In Cairo, President Obama addressed the Israeli Palestinian conflict, the major issue dividing the United States and the Muslim world. He acknowledged our powerful bond with Israel and the suffering of Palestinians, which resulted from the creation of Israel. He expressed strong support for a Palestinian state. But he failed to use the adjective viable in describing that state. He did urge a halt to Jewish settlements on the West Bank. But the real problems are the existing West Bank settlements, the roads that connect them, the security in place to protect them, and a giant wall constructed by Israel which separates some Palestinians from their lands and jobs. With these in place there can be no viable Palestinian state.

I want to start out with a simple question: "Who are we?" I ask that question because I feel like it's the one we've spent the last 13 years of our lives answering.
