ST. PAUL - Through the wind, rain and cold of this track and field season Brainerd's Tom Lyscio has been Mr. Steady.
His steadiness continued Friday in the finals of the Class 2A state shot put at Hamline University as he placed fifth with a throw of 54 feet, 9 inches, three inches shy of his career best, and earned all-state distinction.
"I was seeded fourth," Lyscio said, "and that's kind of where I thought I was going to be. A fifth-place finish in the state meet is not a bad thing at all."
With the wind swirling, and in intermittent rain, Lyscio threw 52-7 in the prelims to advance to the finals.
Warriors throwing coach Chet Stevenson said Lyscio threw about as well as could be expected.

"When you consider you come down to the state meet, and you throw probably the second- and third-best throws of your career, you can't really ask for much more than that," he said.
"He's always been a great competitor," Stevenson added. "He's pretty much been Mr. Steady all season long, and today was no different. I kind of figured he would hold his seed and basically he held his distance. It was just that one guy (seeded) below him kind of had the best day of his life."
Lyscio moved up four places from where he finished in last year's state meet.
"More confidence, more experience, stronger, faster, all the tools that make you a thrower," Lyscio said of the difference between last year's showing and this year's.
Lyscio was scheduled to compete in the discus Saturday morning.
