Three local real estate professionals recently attended the National Association of Realtors' Mid Year meetings in Washington D.C.
Attending were Linda Christianson, Greater Lakes Association of Realtors president; Kevin Goedker, GLAR's Multiple Listing Service president; and Janie Weston, GLAR chief executive director.
Realtors from around the nation attended business meetings and discussed their concerns for private property rights with their legislators. Meeting with the Minnesota delegation was Sen. Norm Coleman and Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Legislative assistants for Reps. Tim Walz, John Kline, Jim Ramstad, James Oberstar and Michele Bachmann also visited and listened to the requests to enact legislation that:
Modernizes the Federal Housing Administration single-family mortgage insurance program and permanently increase loan limits; strengthen the housing mission of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and permanently increase loan limits; enable a temporary tax credit for individuals who purchase a principal residence; reauthorize the National Flood Insurance Program before it expires Sept. 30; and enact small business health reforms to correct the inequities inherent in the nation's health insurance delivery system.
Christensen teaches fair housing classes
Jo Christensen of Edina Realty recently taught the required representation and fair housing classes.
The Minnesota Department of Commerce requires Minnesota real estate licensees to complete 15 hours of continuing education each year of a two-year license period. Part of the 30-credit requirement must include a fair-housing course and a course about real estate agent and agency representation in a real estate transaction.
The fair housing course is designed to make sure discrimination at any level doesn't occur in the transfer of real estate. Discrimination under the law applies not just to the agents but to other parties to the transaction, including consumers.
The agency course refers to the representation of buyers and sellers and the professional real estate agents involved in the real estate deal.
