HACKENSACK -- Hackensack will celebrate Lucette and Paul Bunyan's 164th wedding anniversary Friday-Sunday with a series of events.
Prairie Fire Theater will present productions of "Jack and the Bean Stalk" at 7 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hackensack Community Center.
From 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hackensack City Park there will be an amateur lumberjack contest, including hand sawing and axe throwing contests. Anyone can participate to win cash prizes. Professionals will supervise events.
Accordionist Russell Dokes will provide music throughout Saturday afternoon at the city park.
There will be a sidewalk sale and craft fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. At 9 a.m., park festivities, kids games, races, marshmallow golf and a horseshoe tournament will begin.
Everyone is encouraged to bring a home-baked pie to the Hackensack Senior Center by 9:30 a.m. Saturday for judging in a pie-baking contest. Judging will be at 11 a.m. A trophy, ribbons and Lucie Loot to spend at participating Hackensack businesses will be awarded to winning pie bakers at 11:30 a.m.
All pies will be auctioned at noon to benefit the Hackensack Chamber of Commerce new building fund. Other baked goods will be accepted for the auction.
Lucette's and Paul's 3-foot by 5-foot anniversary cake will be on display Saturday at the Hackensack Senior Center. Jim and Jene Garard, owners of Hackensack Bakery, will create the cake.
M and M and the Music Man will provide music for the 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. dance Saturday at the Hackensack American Legion.
Sunday, there will be an old-fashioned lumberjack breakfast from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hackensack Community Center.
Drawing for a raffle for a handmade wildlife quilt will be 11 a.m. Sunday. The winner need not be present to win.
