STAPLES -- The Staples-Motley Cardinals baseball team belted out 12 hits and defeated Park Rapids 6-4 to advance to the Section 8AA semifinals Thursday at Wadena County Stadium.
Charlie Gaugert had a big day for the Cardinals, going 2-for-4 with four RBI, and Hector Baez was 2-for-4 as well. Justin Kolling was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Chris Jennissen was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Cardinals scored their six runs in the first four innings and committed no errors.
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton will play Perham 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the other semifinal at Wadena. The championship is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday.

ST. CLOUD -- The Pierz Pioneers baseball team jumped to a two-run lead in the first inning but could not get anything going after that as it fell to Melrose 4-2 in the Section 6AA losers' bracket game Monday.
The Pioneers had only four hits. T.J. Watercott and John Kahl were 1-for-2 and Dan Saehr and Austin Krohn were both 1-for-3 as the Pioneers finished 8-11.
Melrose's Aaron Welle pitched a complete game and was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.

PERHAM -- The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines baseball team couldn't string enough hits together as it was shut out 5-0 by Perham in the Section 8AA quarterfinals Monday.
Tyler Currie was 1-for-3 with a double. Joe Simon and Jason Ohrmundt were 1-for-3 and Matt Sweere was 1-for-2 for the Wolverines, who finish the season 11-8.
