Weiss, Grunewald, Herdegen qualify for state

MOORHEAD -- The Section 8AA track and field meet turned out to be quite the event for Brainerd Warriors junior Mike Weiss and freshman Justin Grunewald, both of whom qualified for the state meet next weekend in Blaine.

Little Falls Flyers' Kerry Herdegen also will be making the trip to state. Herdegen qualified for state in the triple jump with a second-place finish of 43-3 1/4.

Weiss qualified in the shot put by taking second place with a throw of 47 feet, 5 inches, and in the discus with a throw of 146 feet, good enough for runner-up honors.

Grunewald will run the 3200 at the state meet after his second-place finish with a 9:58.74, just five seconds off the pace set by winner Joshua Conneran of Moorhead.

Overall, the Brainerd boys placed fourth, finishing in a tie with Sartell-St. Stephen.

The Brainerd girls struggled at the section meet as they finished last with only 11 points. Ashley Schmolke placed third in the 100 dash with a time of 13.23, which was just shy of state qualifying.

The Flyers' Becky Anderson finished third in the 3200 run.
