EDINA - Marilyn J. Koering, Ph.D., age 70, Edina, Minn., passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008, at NC Little Hospice in Edina. She was born in Brainerd on Jan. 7, 1938, the daughter of the late Clem and Vi (Holtkamp) Koering.
Marilyn graduated from Washington High School in 1956 and the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth in 1960 with a bachelor of arts degree in anatomy, chemistry. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in anatomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Koering joined the faculty of George Washington University (GWU) Medical School in 1969 as a professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. She retired as a professor emeritus after 34 years to Edina, Minn., in 2002. A great professional moment for her was receiving the Distinguished Teaching Award from the GWU faculty and students after 34 years on the faculty. She had taught over 5,000 medical and graduate students in semester long classes. She had stated that this was a most enjoyable time to be part of their educational process for those students would be able to assist to the needs of so many people in the world. Students said that she was a teacher who cared about them personally and professionally, working to assure that they would become excellent physicians.
Dr. Koering was a 2005 inductee into the Brainerd High School Hall of Fame. She cited that the values she had been taught and practiced in Brainerd carried her through her years of higher education and a rewarding career.
Marilyn was featured in the Lakes Country Journal in 2004 with her microscopic photography followed by a display of her scanning microscopic images in August 2007 at the Franklin Arts Center.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Clem and Vi Koering, Brainerd, Minn. She is survived by her sister, Beverly (Dennis) VanRuden, Woodbury, Minn., and her children, Brennan Cox, Lino Lakes, Minn., and Carolyn Cox (David) Dunn, Afton, Minn.; sister, Susan Koering, Plymouth, Minn. Aunts include Clara Rose (Holtkamp) Heikka and Gertrude (Meyers) Holtkamp, both of Brainerd.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home with parish prayers at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2008, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd at Ninth and Juniper streets with Father Francis Paquette officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
