Mary Houle-Beutz became the first recipient of the Barbara Uppgaard Spirit of the Lakes Community Service Award Thursday by the League of Women Voters Brainerd Lakes Area at its annual meeting.
The award was established in honor of the late Barbara Uppgaard, a former Crow Wing County commissioner, a former Pequot Lakes School Board member and the founding member of the League of Women Voters Brainerd Lakes Area.
The lakes area is a better place because of Uppgaard's leadership, her integrity, her sense of humor, her insuppressible spirit and most of all, the love she lived every day for her family, her friends and her community, League member Karen Christofferson said at the award presentation.
This award was developed to recognize other League members for their dedicated service and as a way to honor Uppgaard's memory and service.
Beutz works through the League to register young voters at the Brainerd High School and Central Lakes College and wherever she finds young people old enough to vote by the next election cycle.
She organizes the participation of at least one young woman each year in a leadership program sponsored by the League of Women Voters Minnesota.
Beutz coordinates the publication and distribution of League Lines and distributes public service announcements for every League program.
