Braves outscore Long Prairie

LONG PRAIRIE -- The Brainerd Braves outscored the Long Prairie Shockers 13-5 in Victory League amateur baseball Friday.

Jade O'Brien was 3-for-5 with four RBI, a double and two home runs for Brainerd. Marty Hill was 2-for-3 with a solo home run, Adam Browning 2-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBI and Derek Owen was 3-for-6 with an RBI.

Winning pitcher Jeff Barrett went 6 1/3 innings, allowed six hits and no earned runs, walked one and struck out 10.

Bees defeat Ultimate The Brainerd Bees beat the Ultimate 4-3 in a Lakewood League amateur baseball game Friday at Mills Field.

Mike Shogren pitched a complete game for Brainerd. He gave up two earned runs and five hits, walked five and struck out five.

The Bees' Josh Smith hit a 2-run homer in the fifth and Tim Martin added a 2-run single in the sixth.

On Thursday the Bees lost an exhibition game against the Bemidji Mudcats 7-3 at Mills Field.

Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and Nate Thomas had a 2-run single in the sixth for Brainerd. Losing pitcher Bruce Ericson gave up one earned run and 10 hits, struck out two and walked none in seven innings.

Riverfest run June 10

The Riverfest 5-kilometer run is scheduled 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Little Falls.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, 200 NW 1st St., in Little Falls.

The 5km course is flat and wheeled to measure accuracy. A free run consisting of a half-mile or mile will begin following the 5km.

Chamber bucks are awarded to winners in seven different age categories, and all participants in the 5km will receive T-shirts.

The event is sponsored by the Family Medical Center, St. Gabriel's Rehabilitation Services, Little Falls Orthopedics and the Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.

Curling seminars scheduled

The Minnesota Curling Association and the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department will co-sponsor two curling seminars next Saturday at the Brainerd Area Civic Center.

Anyone interested may choose to attend a seminar from 9 a.m. to noon or from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge. The seminars are open to people age 13 and older.

Summer sports classes at YMCA

The Brainerd Family YMCA is accepting registrations for summer sports classes.

Children from beginning kindergarten to second-grade students may choose from sports 101, soccer, fitness and tumbling.

Preschoolers may try the sports sampler. Space is limited. Classes begin June 12. For more information contact David at the YMCA 829-4767.

Four Verndale players all-subsection

Verndale Pirates senior baseball players Zach Hinkle (pitcher-third base), Trent Carr (pitcher-third base) and Mike Hess (pitcher-outfield) along with junior Steve Schmitz (pitcher-outfield) were among 15 players to make the All-Subsection 6A East tournament team.

Tautges girls' track MVP

Jacki Tautges has been named the most valuable member of the Brainerd Warriors girls' track and field team.

Most improved awards went to Janelle Huss (freshman), Cori Severson (sophomore), Susie Carlson (junior) and Sarah Bernu (senior). Julie Pelzer received the Borgwarth Award. Captains for 2001 will be Katie Majka, Erin Schellin and Annie Zauhar.
