George Burton of rural Brainerd, the Constitution Party-endorsed candidate for the 8th Congressional District seat, was in St. Paul Tuesday presenting a petition to state officials to place his name on the ballot this November.
Burton, 46, whose real name is Richard Burton, said earlier he's known in the Brainerd area as George Burton. He said that Richard Burton likely would be how he was listed on the ballot.
The congressional candidate could not be reached for comment Tuesday. A supporter who has helped him with the petition estimated he had more than the required 1,0000 signatures but said state officials would have to go through the list to verify them.
State law required Burton to gather 1,000 signatures between May 18 and Tuesday.
On Tuesday night, Burton was not listed on the secretary of state's website as an 8th District candidate.
Other candidates who will challenge incumbent Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., of Chisholm are Chip Cravaack, a Republican from Lindstrom; W.D. "Bill" Hamm, a Democrat, of Bovey; and Timothy Olson, an Independence Party candidate from Buhl.
