It will be one and done if Crow Wing County Board candidate Gene Goedker is elected to the District 4 seat currently held by Rosemary Franzen.
The longtime owner of Goedker Realty, who has served on the Brainerd City Council and in numerous civic and professional organizations, said he'll serve only one term if elected.
"I'll run for one term," he said. "If you can't do your job in one term, there's something wrong."
Changing board members and getting a new perspective are usually good, Goedker said in a news release.
Goedker, 69, served two stints on the Brainerd City Council totaling nearly 12 years. He has been president of the Minnesota Association of Realtors and has headed the Brainerd Jaycees and the Brainerd area United Way campaign.
He said his candidacy was inspired by a Brainerd Dispatch editorial noting the importance of quality candidates stepping up Goedker said he has no beefs or ax to grind with the current county board but would like to help keep costs in line if elected.
A Baxter resident, Goedker has been married more than 50 years to his wife, Karol. They have three sons; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, with a fourth great-grandchild expected soon.
Goedker said he suffered a stroke a couple of years ago and while that may limit his ability to campaign door-to-door, it would not affect his decision-making or his ability to attend meetings. In his statement he billed himself as a conservative watchdog who would hold the line for taxpayers.
"I probably have more questions than answers," he said when asked about potential changes he might initiate if elected.
Goedker, who unsuccessfully ran for the state Senate in the early 1980s, is the father of Kevin Goedker, the Republican-endorsed candidate for House District 12A.
