BARROWS - Wissota Street Stock racer Dan Severson of Crosby, in his 11th year behind the wheel, will remember his first victory Saturday night at North Central Speedway.
Severson, in a 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo, won the feature by holding off two of the top nationally ranked Wissota Street Stock racers. Mike Jans of Clarkfield, fifth in points, finished second and Cory Tammen of Clara City, seventh in points, finished third.
"It was probably the most exciting thing I've done all year, next to getting married," said Severson.
Severson's victory wasn't the only exciting race of the night. Brian Strand of Bemidji made a daring outside pass in the closing laps to win the Wissota Modified feature. A caution was the key to Dan Gullikson of Stacy winning the Wissota Super Stock feature.
Other feature winners were Andy Jones of Princeton in Wissota Midwest Modified and Allen Brehmer in NCS Pure Stock.
Jones won his third straight feature at NCS and Gullikson and Brehmer won their second straight features at the speedway. Gullikson and Strand also collected clean sweeps by winning their heat races earlier.
Severson protects inside
Severson, who won at Bemidji earlier this season, drove his car on the bottom of the turns to hold off Jans who started sixth but was already behind Severson on the second lap.
"It was tough, he showed his nose right away and once he did I moved to the bottom and then tried to keep him guessing as to which line I was going to drive," Severson said. "I had more power off the corner off so I could pull him a little bit when we had to."
Strand makes late pass to win
With his car's left front tire off the ground on the tacky track, Strand passed Shane Sabraski on the high side of turn four with six laps to go in the 20-lap feature. Strand's pass didn't stick though until he came close to the wall near the line and then cut down on Sabraski, who led for 10 laps.
"He was going fast too so I knew I just had to roll it in there a little harder than he did and hope like heck it stuck," Strand said. "That might not have worked if it would have been somebody else but he gave me room and I gave him room."
Sabraski, who started sixth, finished second and third-place starter Eric Martini finished third.
Sabraski's pass of polesitter Brad Jensen four laps into the race also was gutsy. He, Strand and Jensen were three-wide exiting turn two when Sabraski in the middle made his pass.
Gullikson gets break in Super Stock feature
If not for a caution with two laps to go, Gullikson, who started eighth, probably wouldn't have won.
Tim Johnson, who started ninth, had just passed him on the inside of turn two before the caution. But the caution sent the field back to the last completed lap where Gullikson was leading and he was able to hold off Johnson.
Last year's track champion and 11th-place starter Ken Puckett from Clear Lake finished third.
Jones collects his third straight victory
Jones raced on the outside of early leader Ryan Kriese of Rice for about a lap before he took the lead for good on turn two.
The battle to watch was between Kriese and Dan Ebert, who started 15th, for third place. Racing Strand's car from last year, Ebert raced the high line in an attempt to reel in Kriese but settled for fourth. Matt Weisman finished second.
Brehmer leads every lap
Outside polesitter Brehmer led every lap in the caution-free Pure Stock feature. He already built a half-lap lead over the pack early in the feature and stretched it even further at the finish. Luke Shipman finished second and Mike Smude third.
