Eight students to seek Miss Brainerd Lakes title

Eight young women from the Brainerd lakes area will compete in the 2004 Miss Brainerd Lakes Scholarship Pageant.

Queen candidates are Jenni Badeaux, Shaynah Baptiste, Jessica Doud, Jocelyn Jones, Quinn Nystrom, Amy Peeters, Nichole Phillips and Laura Rozinka.

Badeaux, 18, a 2004 Brainerd High School graduate, is the daughter of George and Lorrie Badeaux. For her talent she will sing.

Baptiste, 17, a 2004 BHS graduate, is the daughter of Rhonda Baptiste. For her talent she will sing.

Doud, 17, a BHS junior, is the daughter of Guy Doud and Tamara Mathiowetz. For her talent she will perform a jazz dance.

Jones, 17, a BHS junior, is the daughter of Robert and Arlene Jones, and Grace Jones. For her talent she will play the violin.

Nystrom, 18, a 2004 BHS graduate, is the daughter of Robert and Rachel Nystrom. For her talent she will play the piano.

Peeters, 17, a BHS junior, is the daughter of Greg and Pam Peeters. For her talent she will perform a jazz dance.

Phillips, 18, a 2004 BHS graduate, is the daughter of Randy and Nancy Phillips. For her talent she will perform a jazz dance.

Rozinka, 17, a BHS junior, is the daughter of David and Lonna Rozinka. For her talent she will perform a jazz dance.

The candidate crowned Miss Brainerd Lakes will go on to compete in the 2005 Miss Minnesota Pageant and could potentially be crowned Miss America. The new queen will receive a $1,500 college scholarship, the runner-up will be awarded a $700 scholarship while the second runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship. Awards will be given for candidates with the highest scores in evening gown, swimsuit, personal interview and talent. Miss Congeniality also will be awarded.

Vicki Randall, the 1977 Miss Brainerd, serves as pageant director. She worked to bring back the pageant hoping to give other young women from the Brainerd lakes area the same opportunity she received when she was crowned Miss Brainerd at age 17.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. There is no reserved seating. Tickets are available in advance at Brainerd Community Education and may be purchased over the phone by calling 828-5372.

Bill Musel will serve as master of ceremonies at the pageant.

Special guest is 2003 Miss Minnesota Megan Torgerson. Torgerson is a student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, where she is in the second year of the Master of Divinity program. She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with majors in religion and English writing.

Throughout her educational career, Torgerson has traveled to 14 countries and more than 30 states while remaining active in vocal performance, theater and community and church organizations. Torgerson has been singing since she was old enough to read. She sang for three years with the world-renowned Concordia Choir.

The scholarship pageant is sponsored by Brainerd Community Education and Brainerd Area Women of Today.
