McGREGOR -- Walter W. Maijala, 83, Tamarack, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth.
He was born March 18, 1918, to Henry and Hilma (Kallio) Maijala in Tamarack. He attended Rice Lake School. He farmed and logged in the Tamarack and Lawler area all of his life. He married Ruth E. Swedberg Nov. 9, 1940, in Duluth. For many years, he traveled the country at harvest time with his threshing machine. He served many years on the Tamarack Coop Board, was a life-long member of the Tamarack Lutheran Church and served as the sexton for the Salo Cemetery for more than 50 years.
Survivors include his wife; a son, James Maijala, Tamarack; a daughter, Elaine Smith, Superior, Wis.; a sister, Alice Otterson, Cloquet; a brother, Arnold Maijala, McGregor; seven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Nine brothers and a sister died earlier.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor with Rev. Clifford Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Salo Cemetery.
Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church.
