Brett enjoys outdoor activities
We just added another young man to our waiting list this month. Like many of the other boys on the list, Brett needs a positive male role model in his life who enjoys outdoor activities and is willing to give just a couple hours a week.

MUCH OBLIGED
I would like to express my appreciation to all those who took part in the Brainerd Warrior Baseball Alumni Day on May 14. The entire concept was the brain-child of Dan Anderson, class of 1992. He enlisted help from Ray Austin, Mike Bialka, John Backlund and Colin MacDonald and things started to take shape. All in all, it was a special day for me, and I hope, for everyone involved.

CORRECTION
In a May 15 housing brief, the name of Katie McCarthy Lee of Edina Realty was incorrect. The brief incorrectly listed her name as Kathy rather than Katie.

MAY 31 - 40 years ago (1969) - A 12-year-old Minneapolis boy was killed and a 6-year-old was critically injured in a two-car accident on Highway 169 near Garrison. Seven others were hurt in that accident, plus four more in other area accidents over Memorial Day.

The 22-year-old Little Falls man who led Crow Wing County deputies on a chase Thursday has a history of harassment, law officials said.

ONAMIA - Margaret Hill, 80-year-old resident of Onamia, Minn., passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minn. Funeral ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2009, at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Community Center on the Mille Lacs Reservation. Burial will be in the Vineland Burial Grounds. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at the Mille Lacs Band Community Center. Arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Onamia, Minn.

Alice A. Smude
PINE CENTER - Alice Anna Smude, age 81, resident of Pine Center, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Edgewood Vista Senior Living in Brainerd. Alice was born in Lastrup, Minn., to George and Anna (Held) Tretter on April 25, 1928. She married Alex (Butch) Smude on April 15, 1947. Alice is the mother of 10 children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Since President Nixon launched Project Independence to liberate us from foreign oil imports, most American presidents have proclaimed our need for energy independence. George W. Bush sharpened the tone when he proclaimed in his 2006 State of the Union address that we were addicted to oil.

Congratulations to Brainerd Public Schools for its recent A-plus rating on financial management as awarded by Standard and Poors, a nationally accredited investment in money management analyst firm. Sometimes we don't realize what we have within our own community and we let a few naysayers paint a gloomy picture when things are actually pretty good.

OUR OPINION: SAFETY
Minnesota's Memorial Day traffic death toll of 12 was the highest since 1996, when 13 died, and all to close to the record of 1972 when 16 died.
