Bert Leonard Wahlberg was born May 19, 1910, to Knute Albert Wahlberg and Lily Elizabeth Stenson. He was the first born of 11 children. His father came from Sweden in 1901 and settled on the northwest corner of Grindstone Lake. His mother was born in South Dakota and at age 9, came with her family by covered wagon to Minnesota. The Stensons settled on the southeast corner of Grindstone Lake.

Regret expressed on Mahle's resignation
I grew up in Minneapolis and have lived in Brainerd for the past year and I'm shocked and appalled by what I have heard and read about the resignation of the fire chief, Kevin Mahle. I have no ties to the man, I've never met him and wouldn't know him if he came up to me and started a conversation with me. I have to say that I agree with the article written by Nancy Sykes in the Open Forum on May 13.

Much Obliged
On behalf of the American Diabetes Association, I would like to thank Baxter Elementary School for participating in the area's first school walk. One hundred three students raised more than $5,890 to help fund research to find a cure for this disease that today affects 17 million people. The top class was the second-graders, raising $1,632.43, and the top individual fund-raiser was third-grader Alex Wasnie.
What's Doing?
The Garrison Seniors will meet noon Tuesday at the Garrison City office building on Central Street, four blocks west of the walleye concourse on Highway 169. Members are asked to bring a potluck food item to share and their plates, cups and silverware. After the meal, state Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley, will talk to the group, so bring questions for him. All area senior citizens are welcome to become members. Dues are $5 and may be paid to the treasurer either before or following the meeting.
