APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- Brad Bonine went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored Tuesday to lead St. Thomas to an 8-4 victory over Marietta (Ohio) in the championship game of the NCAA Division III College World Series.

The Tommies (39-10), who were no-hit in their first regular-season game and finished third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, went 10-2 in the postseason and captured their first national title since the women's basketball team's in 1991.

St. Thomas had finished second in the last two College World Series.

Brian Whinnery allowed six hits, five walks and three earned runs in a complete game, striking out six and pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning. After a 2-4 regular season, Whinnery was 4-0 with one save and a 1.10 ERA in the postseason.

The Pioneers (48-9) beat defending champ Montclair State, 3-2, in an elimination game earlier Tuesday.
