The last two active members of the Brainerd Warriors tennis team are still rolling toward what they hope will be a trip to the Minnesota State High School Class AA tennis tournament June 6-9.
The doubles team of Paul Tuchscherer and Erik Bohn won the Section 8AA quarterfinals match in straight sets over Chase Korte and Wade Felska, a duo from Elk River.
Tuchscherer, a sophomore, and Bohn, a senior, had played primarily singles matches during the season. They seemed to have little trouble adjusting to tournament doubles play as the two controlled the match throughout and cruised to 6-2, 6-2 victories.
Warriors' head coach Bruce Thompson was not surprised at the success of Tuchscherer and Bohn.
"The doubles game is a little different," said Thompson, "but these two guys played together last year and some this season. They have not played together for a long time so you hope the volleys and strokes are there. They did a real good job today. They're both good players. They've got a good chemistry and played well together. So hopefully, they can carry that on until tomorrow because they have to play the No. 1 seed."
Tuchscherer and Bohn came out of the North Subsection as the No. 2 seed. The No. 1 doubles seed they were scheduled to face today beginning at 9:30 a.m. was the tandem of Dan Sheldon and Andy Rock, another Elk River team.
"Dan Sheldon and Andy Rock is going to be a key match," said Thompson. "Our guys will just have to get geared up and ready to play. They'll really have to close in and volley and really attack the net, that's kind of a key."
The winners will advance to the championship match later today. The losers will play a in match for third place scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Should Tuchscherer and Bohn lose to the Elk River pair and win the third place match, they could still earn a trip to state. The section tournament has a True Second feature which means that, if the third place winner was beaten by the eventual champion, they have an opportunity to play the second place team in a playoff to determine the second Section 8AA representative to the state meet.
In other Section 8AA tournament action, Elk River, the South Subsection champion, defeated Fergus Falls, the North Subsection champion, 4-3 to earn the team bid to the state tournament.
