BEMIDJI (AP) -- A man was shot to death and two other people stabbed in separate attacks in Beltrami County, and the man's 14-year-old son and another teen-ager were taken into custody.
Beltrami County sheriff's officers responded to a report of a double stabbing Monday afternoon in Ten Lakes Township, east of Bemidji. Eugene Campbell, 46, was stabbed in the throat and his wife, Carol Campbell, 62, was stabbed in the neck, according to the sheriff's department.
The Campbells are the parents of a 17-year-old girl who was taken into custody. They were attacked while they were out looking for the girl, who had run away from a caretaker at the couple's residence, the sheriff's department said.
The officers then went to the suspect's nearby home and found the body of Daryl Kent Headbird, 41. He was believed to have been shot in the head while asleep Saturday, authorities said.
The 14-year-old, suspected of shooting Headbird and stabbing the Campbells, and the 17-year-old, described as the boy's girlfriend, were arrested shortly after 8 p.m. Monday while hitchhiking on Highway 2, east of Grand Rapids.
Authorities said it did not appear the girl was directly involved in either attack.
"Both the Campbells and Headbird were apparently discouraging the relationship between those kids," Sheriff Keith Winger said. "That's all I can really surmise at this point."
Tuesday night, Eugene Campbell was listed in stable condition at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji, while Carol Campbell was listed in fair condition at St. Mary's Hospital.
