Grand Casino Hinckley to host national Indian

boxing tournament

HINCKLEY -- Boxers from across the United States and Canada will come together to compete at Grand Casino Hinckley from June 20-22.

This is the second consecutive year that this community will host the National Indian Athletic Association's All-Indian Boxing Championships, an annual tournament that originated more than 30 years ago.

Many American Indian boxers will participate, including several Mille Lacs Band members who box for the Lake Lena Boxing Club from Hinckley. They will box according to age and weight classes, with ages 10-34 competing.

Matches will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 20-21, and at 3 p.m. Friday, June 22, in the Grand Casino Hinckley Ballroom. Approximately 15-20 bouts will take place each day.

Trophies will be awarded to the champions and outstanding boxers. Jackets will also be awarded to the senior (ages 17-34) champions.

The public is invited to attend the tournament, with tickets available at the door. Adult tickets for Wednesday and Thursday will cost $5, children's and Elders' tickets $3, and ringside seats $8.

Tickets for Friday night, which will feature championship bouts, will be $7 for adults, $3 for children and Elders, and $10 for ringside. Proceeds will go toward the boxers' expenses and tournament expenses.
